Enjoy a rich, well-drained soil in good light, they resent root disturbance and are best moved and planted into a permanent site whilst young. Not a plant for the impatient gardener, most species take 5 to 7 years from seed before flowering; however they are long lived plants.
A truly stunning species with deep dissected green leaves and eventually very large deep red flowers, usually in May, as can be seen from the image of our stock plants.
Dwarf Chinese species with rich pink flowers and golden anthers open in June above grey-green, dissected leaves. Very hardy. Three year old plants from seed.
